The MKSD Middle School serves children in grades six through eight through a day or residential placement. The Middle School curriculum complies with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and all students, regardless of abilities, are exposed to the Standards through the IEP process.

Specialized programming is available to students with multiple disabilities. All classes are taught by appropriately certified instructors who have special training in working with Deaf students with multiple disabilities. The program meets the distinctive needs of students by providing individualized instruction through direct communication and a low student to adult ratio. Our residential program for these students is unique, as it meets the needs of our students with multiple disabilities within the regular residential program

The transition from elementary to middle school can be stressful for students. Meeting the social and emotional needs of the young adolescent is a core component of our Middle School philosophy. Students have the opportunity to meet regularly with the Guidance Counselor, individually or in a small group. These sessions focus on the development of interpersonal relationships and appropriate social skills.

Students receive recognition for academic achievement and good citizenship at monthly assemblies. Recognizing the success of a young adolescent is an import part in their development of positive self-identity and self-esteem.

Students receive the traditional academic offerings with a double period for Language Arts.  Middle School brings to the students the introduction of Wood Shop and Home Economics.  Students attend special class programs in Deaf Culture, Library Instruction, Technology, Visual and Performing Arts, and Gym. Students participated in the National Science Foundation's Distance Learning Project for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students.

Students participate in enrichment opportunities through the Katzenbach Academically Talented Students Program (KATS).  Speech and Language therapy, Audiological services, and Adaptive Physical Education are offered as related services.  Students have the choice to join Student Council and a variety of clubs during an in school activity period.  Student participation in after school recreational activities are coordinated and provided by the Middle School Residential Program.

All 8th grade students participate in the state required assessments of student achievement through the GEPA or the New Jersey Department of Education's Alternative Assessment.  All students are assessed through the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT).  The SAT compares our students with both the Deaf and Hearing population throughout the country.

The goal of the Middle School is to provide the students with a challenging curriculum in an environment that meets their social, emotional, and cultural needs while preparing them for their high school experience.
